How to Report Stolen Electronics (Laptop, Phone, Camera)

What to do immediately after your laptop, phone, or camera is stolen — from remote lock to filing a report that actually helps you get it back.

1. Lock and locate the device remotely

Use Find My iPhone, Find My Device (Android), or your laptop's built-in tracking (Find My Mac, Windows "Find my device") immediately to lock the device and see its last known location. Do this before anything else — every minute matters.

2. Change your passwords

Immediately change passwords for email, banking, and any apps that were logged in on the device. Enable two-factor authentication where you can.

3. File a police report with the serial number

Every laptop and phone has a serial number or IMEI (dial *#06# on most phones to find it). Include this in your police report — it's the single most useful identifier for recovery and for blocking the device from being resold or reactivated.

4. Report it on Re·Covered

Create a stolen item alert with the serial number, brand, model, and photos. If the item was registered beforehand, its full ownership history is already attached, making it easy to prove ownership if it is recovered or if someone tries to resell it.

5. Notify your insurance

If you have renters, homeowners, or device insurance, file a claim with your police report number. Re·Covered's insurance tools can help match you with a policy or track an existing claim.
