What to Do If You Find a Lost Item or Pet
Found something that isn't yours, or a stray pet? Here's how to track down the owner quickly and safely — and how to claim a reward if one is offered.
1. Search Re·Covered for a matching alert
Search the Lost & Stolen Alerts page by category, city, and keywords from what you found. Owners often post photos and serial numbers, so a quick search can identify a match in seconds.
2. Check for ID, tags, or a microchip
For pets, look for a collar tag or ask a vet clinic or shelter to scan for a microchip — this is the fastest way to identify an owner. For items, check for engravings, serial numbers, or "Find My" activation screens.
3. Report what you found
If there's no matching alert yet, use the "I Found This Item" option on a listing, or contact the owner directly through the contact details on their alert. Include clear photos and where and when you found it.
4. Meet safely to return it
Arrange to meet the owner in a public place, or ask a local police station or shelter to act as a safe drop-off point. Never share your home address with someone you have not verified.
5. Claim your reward
If the owner offered a reward, Re·Covered's recovery flow lets the owner verify your claim and process the payout directly through the platform once the item or pet is safely returned.
